June Events Calendar
Pride Fest, On the Trail of Art, Fire Pit Fridays, and more
This week’s editor’s note is by Cassandra Miller.
Townie friends,
I’ve been thinking about community lately—specifically about tribes.
Right now, I’m going through a stage when I feel untethered from a tribe of people who know me simply as Cassandra, rather than through any of my community roles: executive director of Butternut Valley Alliance, founding editor of Townie, member of the Oneonta Public Arts Commission, arts supporter, cast member, or Oneonta superfan.
Although I’m missing that sense of everyday closeness right now, I’m grateful for the friends from different chapters of my life who still ping in group chats and pick up conversations where we left off, even if weeks or months pass between seeing each other.
I’m especially grateful for the connections that lift me when I’m holding office hours at the Gatehouse or Five Kids Bakehouse in the Butternut Valley (or Latte Lounge in Oneonta). Seeing friendly acquaintances at a play or yoga class, and the excitement of starting rehearsals for “As You Like It” at the Fenimore Museum, still make me feel a part of a community during this “tribeless” period.
Over Memorial Day weekend, I visited friends and family in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and felt deeply seen and known by people who have been important to me throughout several chapters of my life. At an art fair in Baltimore, I was touched when artists I had worked with a decade ago welcomed me with recognition and hugs.
Community is a baby blanket stitched together with patches collected over the years, connecting pieces of fabric that brought comfort at different stages of life. (A childhood friend and I still have remnants of our red gingham baby blankets.)
I hope you wrap yourself in your proverbial blanket of various connections this month in the Oneonta area, which is packed with free festivals, music, and celebrations. My top picks this month are:
PrideFest in Oneonta on June 6
Porchfest in Walton on June 6
GOHS Ballroom Grand Opening Gala on June 12
On the Trail of Art in Morris on June 13-14
Al Gallodoro Stage Summer Concert Series in Oneonta, starting June 19
Read on for more ideas of things to do this month in the Oneonta area.
Warmly (literally),
Cassandra
