Leading up to my 40th birthday in April, I’m writing a four-part series for Townie called “40 Favorites for 40” with Top 10 picks of some of my perennial Oneonta foods, events, shops, and places.

As I round the bases of my 30s, I’ve been reflecting on memories and goals—the ghosts of midlife past, present, and future. (Are you envisioning an elder millennial Scrooge playing baseball? Good. That’s me.) Speaking of ghosts.

My girl Eleanor Roosevelt’s words of advice have been a regular refrain over the years:

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

In adulthood, I’ve touched the top of a few bucket-list mountains (metaphorically–I’m not super outdoorsy). I’ve had dream jobs (in professional theater, at museums, at The Washington Post) and lived in dream places (Boston, NYC, Baltimore, Prague, Bologna, Milan, Florence, Auckland). 

I’ve reached out for newer and richer experiences and decided to return home to Oneonta to build my life here. This community is special. I adore Oneonta and want to share some of my top foods, places, shops, and events that make the City of the Hills a wonderful place to live.
