Townie: Jimkata, American Idiot Musical, Writers Salon, Family Disco
February 18-25, 2025: Top events in and around Oneonta
Yay for Oneonta Events! Black History Month! Drag! Live Music! Theater!
Something I love about Oneonta is the range of events where you can feel welcome and included. This week alone there are Black History Month events, a talk about the Hopi people, a drag show, and Otsego Pride Alliance’s Family Disco.
I’m so darn excited to see this weekend’s production of Green Day rock opera “American Idiot: The Musical” at Foothills. The talented cast includes at least four members who drive more than an hour to Oneonta to be a part of our theater community. The cast features Lexi Bryant, Kyle Davis, Morgan Dutcher, Nick Hinson, Allison Holmberg, Tahya Hurn, Seth Johnson, Josette LaRocca, Dan Lincoln, Marissa Marinick, Katie Marvel, Courtney Murphy, Justin Raymond, Vieno Rowan, Kelsey Stearns, Michael Tamburrino and Katie Tiska. It is directed by Allie Tabor-Church, choreographed by Allie and Josette LaRocca, with vocal direction by Claire Nolan and band direction by Darcy Gibson. Many of those involved with “American Idiot” also brought last winter’s delightfully dirty parody musical “Twisted” to Foothills. Director Allie Tabor-Church and Brian Ziemann, her co-director for last season’s “The Sound of Music,” led the production with thoughtfulness, kindness, and a commitment to excellence. It was a pleasure to be a nun in that show, and I’m certain it will be a pleasure to be an audience member for “American Idiot.”
Another live entertainment highlight this weekend is Friday’s concert by electro-rock band Jimkata, whose core trio grew up together in Oneonta in the late ’90s and early 2000s and have found considerable success touring nationally for the better part of two decades. Cooperstown Concerts is presenting the concert at the Otesaga as part of its new era of bringing a range of different types of music to the area–from a Neil Young cover band to bluegrass and world music. The group is volunteer-run, led by Cooperstown music enthusiast Randy Smith, who also books bands for the village’s summer concert series.
Otsego County’s music scene is thriving thanks to people like Randy and groups like Cooperstown Concerts. Read more about Jimkata in the Cooperstown Concerts-sponsored article I wrote featuring an interview with band member Evan Friedell, who I performed with in the Orpheus Theatre kids’ summer production of “Bye Bye Birdie” way back when. Full circle. I’m very excited to see the show Friday and am taking advantage of a discounted rate at the Otesaga for ticket holders. It’s the perfect excuse for a little staycation with my beau.
I hope to see you out and about!
Warmly,
Cassandra
