In Appreciation of Winter
The seasons of our lives don’t always match the weather outside—sometimes they do, but often, they don’t. This is a concept that I first learned of through a podcast by Jay Shetty, who has said: “It may be winter outside, but your internal season might be summer or fall. The season you're in doesn't have to correspond to the weather outside. It's a cycle you're going through.”
He expands on this idea, writing:
“Winter is a time of reflection, recovery, and restoration. You can look deep inside yourself to find a clear view of who you are and where you want to be if you choose to pay attention. Winter often feels cold and harsh. When you are experiencing the winter season in your life, challenges may be demanding, relationships may be lacking, and it is easy to shut out all the problems you are facing. … by simply leaning into winter, you will be able to go through it.”
Winter in upstate New York often shapes my internal season. It can feel dark and endless, but also reflective and restorative. I savor quiet mornings when I can write and be with my thoughts as the snow-covered ground takes on a soft pink glow of sunrise. Or driving to a client meeting and appreciating the color contrast of baby blue sky and bright gold grass poking through blankets of white. Winter has been wintering big time this year, and I’m thankful for our community, which continues to have a wealth of opportunities for entertainment, creativity, and mutual support.
Events this week include sweet treat-decorating workshops, live music, a sold-out queer self-defense course, and an attorney-led workshop at a highly discounted rate to establish plans for last will and testaments and other end-of-life legalities.
I encourage you to embrace the season in whatever way feels right for you—whether through reflection, creativity, or connecting with others at one of the many events happening this week.
Warmly,
Cassandra
