Weekly Picks: Races, Rummage Sales, and lots more
May 28-June 3, 2025: Top picks for fun and frivolity in and around Oneonta, NY
Editor’s Note
Race season is … off to the races. This Saturday, runners will complete a half-marathon during the annual Race the Lake around Otsego Lake in Cooperstown. The event includes less daunting, but still sizable, 10K and 5K races. Girls on the Run’s annual 5K race will be on Sunday in Oneonta’s Neahwa Park, a perfect fit for those who prefer to keep pace with 10-year-olds rather than those who eat 10-mile runs for breakfast.
A few weeks ago, I decided to start training for the Boilermaker 15K in Utica. I had just built up my three-times-a-week runs to a lifetime high of five miles when my IT band (a tendon along the hip) felt like it had been sucker-punched by a sidewalk stride. I’ve been resting since Saturday to let it heal, and I miss the feeling of accomplishment I’ve grown to crave–and the deep, salt-ringed necklace of sweat on my T-shirt to prove it. I’m tempted to join the Girls on the Run event, but we’ll see.
Another highlight this weekend is the Ward 1 Food Drive at Valleyview Elementary School on Saturday in Oneonta. A friend of mine who lives in Ward 1 shared that her neighborhood has been meeting regularly for at least the last three council members’ terms. Current rep Elayne Mosher Campoli has continued the tradition of hosting collaborative sessions with residents to plan ways to support the community.
It is also rummage sale season, with lots of opportunities to give a second life to items their owners have thanked and released (cue Marie Kondo). This Saturday, walk downtown and check out sales at the First Presbyterian Church and the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta. I’m always on the lookout for botanical prints and seashell dishes, so I might mosey down myself.
Other highlights this weekend:
CANO Mansion Show (Friday)
Oneonta Garden Club Annual Plant Sale (Saturday)
Bugbee Children’s Center 40th Anniversary Bash (Saturday)
Hill City Rollers’ First Home Bout of the Season (Sunday)
The George Lesh Memorial Scholarship Concert (Sunday)
As always, there is so much happening in our community. Read on for more ideas for ways to get out and about this weekend.
I hope to see you around!
Warmly (finally),
Cassandra
