Tropical Fruit Day

Sample a wide variety of tropical fruits and spices and learn about where they come from and why they’re special. Who can say why the science center at SUNY hosts this annual event? But, I know I’ll be there. I love me a mangosteen.
Golden Foundation Open Studios
Thursday, March 21, 5 to 7 p.m. | Golden Foundation Artist Residency, New Berlin
This week is a chance to see new work by and meet artists-in-residence on the grounds of Golden Artist Colors in New Berlin. The cohort of painters who have been working the past month are Massiel Mafes (New York), Jordan Craig (New Mexico), and Jessica Lincoln (York, Canada).
Allie Sandt
Thursday, March 21, 6 to 8 p.m. | Muddy River Brewery, Oneonta
Singer-songwriter Allie Sandt says on her website she writes feel-good folk-rock melodies and was the primary songwriter, singer, and bassist in the former SUNY Oneonta-student driven indie rock band Seeing Double, which has more than 5 million online streams. She’s playing an acoustic set at the West End brewery.
Writers Salon w/ Libby Cudmore
Thursday, March 21, 7:30 p.m. | CANO, Oneonta
Writers Salon features emerging and established local writers of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction on the third Thursday of the month. March’s featured writer is Libby Cudmore, author of the hipster mystery “The Big Rewind” (William Morrow, 2016) and the Martin Wade PI series in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine.
‘Proof’ by David Auburn
Friday, March 22, 7 p.m. | First Presbyterian Church of Stamford
Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Proof” follows Catherine, a young woman grappling with the legacy of her brilliant, mentally ill father, and her own fears of inheriting his condition, with the dynamics of her controlling sister, Claire, and her father's former student Hal, who uncovers a groundbreaking mathematical proof among his notes. The performance is produced by The Party Theater and features Kristin McCalley, Rod Sauquillo, Adrian Shirk and Cary Hooper, and is directed by Marisa Caruso. Tickets start at $10.
Golden Age of Broadway Cabaret
Friday, March 22, 7:30 p.m. | Foothills PAC, Oneonta
The Catskill Symphony Orchestra’s annual fundraiser features vocalists performing with the full orchestra popular Broadway hits by Bernstein, Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, and more. The event includes a guest conductor from the community who raises the most money for the CSO, this year’s conductor fundraisers are Dr. Mary Ellen Hoffman and SSPCA Executive Director Stacy Haynes.
Consider the Source
Friday, March 22, 9:30 p.m. | Foothills PAC, Oneonta
New York City-based sci-fi fusion trio Consider the Source blends progressive rock, improvisatory jazz, and Middle Eastern styles. The band has shared the stage with Wyclef Jean, The Disco Biscuits, and others and has a sweet spot for Oneonta. Consider the Source told Townie that Oney was one of the first places the group played outside of its hometown of NYC. B Side is hosting a show by Laughing Buddha Episodes at 7:30 p.m. as an unofficial pre-show.
SOLD OUT Blossoms & Brews: Flower Arranging Workshop
Saturday, March 23, 1 p.m. | The Gatehouse Coffee, Morris
Led by Joann Curtis, this hands-on workshop will include instruction on essential flower-arranging techniques, tips for selecting the perfect blooms, and a take-home floral centerpiece. The workshop is $45.
Super Heroes Rummage Sale
Saturday, March 23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday, March 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Northern Eagle Beverages, Oneonta
Super Heroes Humane Society is one of the most active nonprofits in the area and provides services like fostering and low-cost spay and neuter programs to animals in the area. It’s hosting its spring community rummage sale this weekend at Northern Eagle in the West End.
‘Chronicling a Crisis’ Book Talk
Saturday, March 23, 1 p.m. | GOHS, Oneonta
According to the publisher, “Chronicling a Crisis” is a collection compiled during the peak of the COVID pandemic between spring 2020 and spring 2021. It sheds light on how SUNY Oneonta was the only school in the state that had to send home all its students twice due to COVID, which attracted international media attention.
Peter Mayer ‘Silent Music’ Art Opening
Saturday, March 23, 4 to 6 p.m. | Diamond Hollow Books, Andes
Artist and broadcaster Peter Mayer will exhibit new works in “Silent Music,” which features works the artist created over a six-month period when his lover of 30 years slipped away from stage four cancer. According to Diamond Hollow Books, the works “[weave] together the paper-thin frailty of beauty and the thump, thump of a heart-beat preparing for its final bow.”
Michael Peters ‘O Kind Vel’d Sparrow’ Art Opening
Saturday, March 23, 4 to 7 p.m. | Bushel Collective, Delhi
In this sound-imaging installation, the “hylopathic-minded” Michael Peters assembles poetry, sound, art (visual poetry), films (kinetic visual poetry), and weird symbolic objects to create an immersive environment, according to the event description. The opening reception features a performance by Peters and guest musician Al Margolis.
The Idol Kings: A Tribute to Journey and REO Speedwagon
Saturday, March 23, 7:30 p.m. | Foothills PAC, Oneonta
If there’s something Upstate NY audiences love, it’s a classic rock tribute act, and The Idol Kings are ready to deliver a night of nostalgia. The group pays homage to REO Speedwagon and Journey and will help scratch that ’80s itch with covers of hits like "Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Keep On Loving You,” as well as "Open Arms" and "Don't Stop Believin'."
NEXT! New Play ‘Jordan & Daisy (& Tom & Nick)’
Sunday, March 24, | Fenimore Museum, Cooperstown
NEXT! staged readings feature new works by regional playwrights and this Sunday’s by Syracuse-based playwright and theater powerhouse Johanna Beale Keller is a twist on “The Great Gatsby” that imagines the female love interests as the main characters with a secret. The reading is directed by Lissa Sidoli with actors Cait Liberati, Lucy Purnine, Andrew Munro, Michael Tamburrino, and Emily Begin.
Joe Jencks
Wednesday, March 27, 7:30 p.m. | Hamblin Theater, SUNY Oneonta

Merging conservatory training with his Irish roots and working-class upbringing, folk singer Joe Jencks delivers engaging musical narratives that reflect the lived experiences of everyday people. Jencks is coming to SUNY Oneonta for two days, starting with a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday that’s titled “A Working-Class Perspective on Diversity as seen through Folk Music.” Both the lecture and concert on Wednesday are free and open to the public.
